My cat is crazy about plastic bags,,,,,,she cuddles with them, bites them ,eats them, plays with them and sleeps with them,.She really likes twister(just the plastic on which you play)she likes the plastic bags in which are toilet paper roles. She gets really upset when she don´t have those plastic bags to cuddle, eat, sleep on/in...........Why is her behavior like that, what attracts her sooo much to plastic bags, and can i stop it,because i´m afraid that she is going to swallow plastic(which is of course bad for her)????????

My Tilde also likes plastic bags. I am not sure what the attraction is, perhaps it is the way they rustle like dry leaves on the ground, where small creatures lurk. I do not let her play with them too long, as she starts to eat them.

I have exactly the same problem. Plastic bags are magnets for him!!! He usually tears them to pieces and probably eats some of the pieces. Moreover, when I try to take the pieces away he gets extremely angry and is even ready to attack me if I don´t give them back!!!

My cat Romba does the same since she was 3 yrs old, the vet told me its very bad for her , especially the trash bags... but its the only one I can´t hide from her (no place for the garbage except one) - she vomits hair balls with prices of plastic and i tried everything , but nothing!!! She doesn´t get that angry but, i am afraid that in 5 seconds she eat/ shew a piece bigger than the size of a hand!!!

Ozzie loves plastic bags too. He doesn´t try to chew them, but he licks on them over and over and hugs them. It´s cute, but like you I´m afraid it isn´t good for him.

I think it´s fine to let them play with a bag while you are supervising so they don´t eat it But I don´t know why they do that. Maybe it´s what oldwoman said and they enjoy the texture.

Funny isn´t It? Abby hates plastic bags—the fainest rustle of one and she is gone like the wind. Lou Lou Belle is neutral about plastic, but she loves paper bags.

My Katie also loves plastic bags. That is her favorite thing to chew on. We are constantly taking plastic away from and keeping it out of her reach so that she will not get into it in the first place, but sometimes that doesn´t always work.

Someone told me it was the smell of the plastic, someone else told me it was the sound. Who knows, some cats like them, some cats don´t...like some people like chocolate and some don´t...lol. It is one of the best toys for those cats who like them but they do need to be supervised...just like little children. Also, a reminder to keep things picked up and out of the way of our furry friends. They are curious about everything and everything is not always good for them.

Someone told me it was the smell of the plastic, someone else told me it was the sound.I read that too.
Turbo loves the very thin plastic bags. He starts licking and chewing them. Thicker bags are simply good to hide in.
Still, I don´t like him around them and I take the bags away as soon as I can.

Yeah i have no idea why your cat is addicted to them, my cat likes to play with wires. But I too think you should hide the plastic backs. Its better for your cats health probaly.

Hey there, some time ago someone else posted a thread about cats and plastic bags. You´ll find more input here:
http://www.unitedcats.com/forum/34/fl/113/t/1484

Plastic is largely inert and will go right through them if they eat it, but having said that you don´t want them eating pieces of plastic that can get jammed in their intestines or stomachs and cause problems. If you can´t keep the bags away from them, try spritzing one with something edible but unpleasant tasting (bitter apple can be bought in pet stores, is safe but unpleasant, to ingest and is used to discourage bad behaviour). If your cat just likes to play in plastic bags and not eat them, be sure to cut the handles off, or cut them in half. I had a cat once get his head stuck in the handle of a plastic bag and although he didn´t get hurt, he seriously panicked. If I hadn´t been there he might have managed to wrap it tightly around his neck in his anxiety to get it off.

My cat Tinkerbelle doesn´t really care about them. If it´s in her way she´ll walk around, not play with it. But Teeleh; He goes crazy. He doesn´t eat it.. I don´t think, he just likes to play IN them, that scares me, I´m afraid he´s going to suffocate himself. He likes to hide under them he does something wrong. Every time there´s something plastic around he has to play with it. He doesn´t care if I take it away, he just tries to find it again. Just the other day I got upset at him for trying to attack my guinea pigs and he ran and hid under the plastic bag, as if I couldn´t get him. I don´t know what it is about them that he likes.. But like Dessislava said, it´s like a magnet to him. I´m just worried he´s going to get sick from it if he eats it, or that he´s going to suffocate from it.

Roméo also has weak for the plastic. What he prefers it is the plastic packaging of the mineral water bottles. He licks it without stop. I absolutely do not know which feeling that gets to him.

my dudu loves plastic bag..but i dun think he will eat it..man..now im getting worried..cos i only saw him hiding himself inside the plastic bag cos it makes some noise when he rolls inside the bag..haha!if it´s paper bag he will tear it up into pieces and my room´s floor full of papers..sometimes im wondering if my dudu is a cat..or a dog!haha..

Mugger is the total plastic bag king. I do supervise his play with them, but he never eats or chews them - he just rubs his nose on them, not sniffing but actually rubbing! He also likes to sleep on them, but I did figure out that was because they hold the heat from his body and keep him warm.

Freckles used to have free rein with plastic bags.... then she started eating them too. Now she gets supervised play after a grocery shopping trip, she dives into them, attacks feet from inside the bag, lays on top of them.... then eats the crap out of them... pulls pieces off, chews, rips.. as if she´s starving and it´s her prey. She does like the plastic bag noise it makes. The real problem is when she goes for the plastic bags that line the little barrels (my bedroom under the desk and the bathroom)... she chews on the edges, and usually at night which wakes me up. I do worry she´ll choke one of these days.

For the shopping bags with handles, the handles always have to be cut because she immediately gets her head through the handle.... never fails.

Want to comment on this subject........

yes, my cat is drawn to plastic bags to sit on but worse......

all my cats when stressed will just smell a plastic bag and squirt urine on them.........

Once was told that the bags are manufactured with animal fat or some such explaining why our cats are drawn to them......anyone heard this before????

Frankly, I keep all plastic bags high and hidden from any of our cats as I have had it with the cat spraying routine that they do....it is not predictable and I don´t take any more chances anymore as I have had it with random cat spraying on plastic bags......this is a male problem in my experience, even though they are all neutered....my female cat does not do it.......

On that note, must comment that if Deelee is going to bring home a ´kill´ it often is a plastic bag.....so, may well be some truth to the idea that I was told years ago that animal renderings are part of plastic bag production.......

Hence, cats love/hate and are ´challenged´ by the odor.....

Once in the middle of the night my cat got into a plastic bag, got it stuck on his head. I was sleeping and didn´t know what was going on until I heard banging on the walls.

I got up to look and he was stuck, trying to get the bag off his head, starting to suffocate and running into the walls.
By the time I saw this, he was already in severe distress and trying to catch his breath. It took me an hour to get him calm and breathing normally again. His breathing never was normal again throughout his life.

I still do not know how he found the bag. But I stopped gathering them from the stores a long time ago.

I use canvas totes and keep them in my car. A lot of stores are selling their own for $1 and then every time you shop, they discount your bill. Pet Food Express does it and the grocery stores, too.

Working in a vet´s office, taking the calls and handing animals off to the vet, I´ve seen stupid owners give their pets all kinds of things they would never allow their children to eat or play with.

If you wouldn´t give to your kid, why would you let your pet have it?

i think don´t use plastic bag anymore is the best way, on the one hand, let us make a green world, the other hand is you don´t need to worry about your cat play the plastic bag without your watch over all the time!

Let us green~
