Cats boo to Royal Canin

I´ve fed all my cats on Royal Canin since day 1 - starting with babycat and then kitten and finally whatever adult food suited their needs. However, at the time of recall, we switched to Iams which they absolutely loved. Couldnt ever get enough of it. Always having believed that RC is superior, I switched back after the recall. They took twice as long as usual to finish the packs, got skinnier and seem to put their noses up to the food. When finally the last of the Royal Canin was finished, I swicthed to Iams again...the rseult: thrilled cats. Have they simply outgrown RC now having a strong preferance for Iams, or should I simply introduce mor variety more often? Do they get bored?

Why not feeding them Iams if they like it better? To my opinion it´s not bad to only feed one brand of catfood. If you have a high premium catfood (as Iams is) you don´t have to worry they miss out on any nutritional values. And I don´t think this is boring. You can feed them some canned food once in a while as a treat (that´s what I do).

My Cleo eats Iams I have tried her on different brands but she turns her nose up at it, but I do buy her different wet food as she likes variety in that. But I stay with Iams

I personally would have stayed with the Royal Canin because my cats are already overweight. But of cource, if your cats are in good shape then just buy what they like.

With my 3 kitties, I give them a variety of Royal Canin, Nutrience , Iams & Hills Science Diet, I have 3 containers of different dried foods in the cupboard so they get a different one each day.
We eat different meals each day, so why can´t the cats too?, mine do!!!!!
Out of all the different kinds I use I´ve found Royal Canin is the most palatable and keeps them in the best shape!!!!

Desmond eats royal Canine too... he is not so excited about it though!
The other day I caught him eating my mom in law´s cat food!! they eat Light Science Diet... apparently Royal Canine is not as tasty as the others but I love it! My cat stopped having hairball problems with it, and at least the persian food comes with special shaped kibbles for flat faced cats.... I don´t know if he grabs it better but at least doesn´t leave a mess anymore!!... his food stays in his plate now, before that he used to drop half of it!!!

Iams is the only way I keep Deelee´s alergies under control, and I am happy with the lovely coats my 4 cats have eating it.....So.....don´t know Royal Canin, etc. but send a positive vote for the iams....

I use a mix of wet and dry...one day dry kibbles and one day wet tinned food. Tegan also gets real meat when we have steak or a roast...she likes a bone to chew on for her teeth too so it´s a balanced diet.

My cats only eat Iams and I am very happy with it. I have tried all the other brands but they don´t seem to like them as much. They like the chicken flavour the best and will only eat the fish or lamb flavour occasionally. As long as it is a good quality and balanced food I like to feed them what they like best.

I like to give variety. Piper eats Royal Canin Oriental (which I had to feed her when Connor lived her) mixed with Science Diet Hairball formula. I´ll probably switch the Oriental to a new formula when this mix is through - but it´s about 40kg of food in a barrel when I mix it up! Then, for treats, she gets 2-4 tablespoons of Iams every morning - and it´s true - SHE LOVES IT!, plus tablespoons almost every day of wet food - but separate (not mixed in) to her kibbles because sometimes she finished it, and sometimes she doesn´t - but she will alway eat her kibbles all the way to the bottom and lick up the crumbs!

Thing is, she is a fatty. The next Royal Canin may have to be a diet one!

Sometimes the healthier foods are not as tasty. Back in the days of 1st hubby, we called the grocery store cat food (whiskas friskies, alley cat, purina and the like) "flavour crystals" because it was like kitty crack! They kittas would go berserk over "flavour crystals," and if they were addicted to them, had to be weaned gradually.

Did you switch the food quickly? Or taper the old food off gradually? Any time you switch foods - even if they seem nutritionally identical - it should be cross tapered to wean off the old food and bring the new one in gradually.

hm, Phoebe loves to change food all the time. monotony is not her choice, so we change it. every meal is different and she is satisfied... she made us to buy different kinds of food, because she didn´t want to eat. she was rather hungry than to eat borring diet
cooked fish with vegetables, some different bought wet meals, olives, cheese, fresh letuce (with drops of water), corn, carrot, cooked meet (chicken, duck, rabbit...), royal canin, hills, science plan, whiskas dry food - yes monotony is not her choice

Well, my two don´t like Iams, they get Urinary RC and wet food. But then having said that they may like it now if I would try it again. Basicaly, just when I think I found something they really like and it´s good for them, they will stop eating it! - Ha cats!

I have just switched to Natural Balance cat biscuits and sent away for them. They are organic with no artificial colouring, flavours, preservatives or bleached ingredients, which a lot of other products do. It also does not contain corn, soy, wheat or sunflower oil. It is Taurine fortified and contains premium quality meats and no by-products. It also contains potatoes and carrots! I am so happy with this and Lucky Brooke and Constantine love them! I feel now I am feeding my cats the right balanced cat food.

Has no one heard of feeding a varied diet?

19.May 2008 13:12

That´s what we are all discussing oldwoman! Looks like we all try to vary our cats diets but I just don´t like to feed my cats anything with artificial substances. I don´t like eating foods which are high in preservatives and so I figure I wouldn´t feed Lucky Brooke and Constantine such foods either. Their coats are soft and silky, their teeth are white and their breath doesn´t smell.( Bad breath should be a sign there is something wrong with any animal´s digestion).

Sorry, I got the impression, that everyone was trying to find the holly grail of cat foods.

socks has to have the unrinal royal canine which has to come from the vets. 12 pouches at over 7 quid a box is a lot of money to waste if he turned his nose up at it. fortunatly he doesnt mind it and wolfs the lot down in seconds

Well , Sidney suffered crystals in his bladder for several years. Vet put him on Hills Feline SD, which seemed to work, but made him very fat. I have taken him off it and feed hin on a varied dry diet (he will ony eat dry). I make sure he always has fresh water and is never shut indoors for very long. A cat kept indoors may hold onto his urine rather than use a litter box and consequently develops crystals. I am glad to say, that Sidney seems OK now, although he is still a bit fat.
