FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. It is similar to HIV in humans, it destroys the immune system of the cat. If the cat is tested positive for FIV, it is by no means a death sentense and I know some people who live with wonderful, happy and healthy FIV cats. But they do require special cares and attention.

Here is a site made by a friend of mine, his gorgeous Alfie is also a FIV cat.

The FIV is also called the AIDS of the cat (of course intransmissible to the man).

It is a serious viral disease. It is responsible for a immunodéficience which makes the cat vulnerable to the infections.

The principal transmission resource is the bite, for example during brawls between cats (because the virus is present in saliva), by contact between cats at the time of frequent and repeated contacts
o by blood way.

There does not exist any vaccine against the F.I.V., contrary to FeLV (virus which is connected with the FIV).

By chance, all my cats were tested and are all negative.

I was wondering because Booboo is FIV+ since birth.... I was just wondering if there were any other kitties out there who have it...

Due to cat aids being so infectous my cats are not aloud outside unless on their harness & leads, just one small bite and your cat could be infected for life until it actually dies from the disease. Every infected cat also reacts differently to the disease, some can live with it for many many years healthy & well, where as some others could be extremly sick & ill until they pass away. Either way I think all infected cats should be kept indoors to try and reduce the spreading of the disease and also if you love your cat let them live indoors too, yes as they say ´ a cat has nine lives ´ but please don´t give them the option of the nine lives killers> poisoning, infectous diseases, lost, stolen, road kill, attacked or killed by dogs, attacked or killed by wildlife, tortured and weather ailments.

It is possible that a cat carrying the virus can live many years without declaring the disease.

Your cat will be vulnerable to the infections.

You will have progressively to treat the “opportunist” diseases of your cat.

The important thing is to take avantage fully from your cat and to offer a serene life to him.

Tender caresses to Booboo

Ok, without trying to sound mean or rude.... I´ll ask again

Is there anyone else on here who has a kittie who is FIV+

I have had Booboo for 5yrs and I know all about his condition from the vet and the shelter he was adopted from... the what to and what not to do etc. I wasn´t asking for help or opinions. As I said I really HONESTLY don´t want to sound mean... but if someone does pop in here and say YES ME I have a kittie also who is FIV+ it will get lost in all the posts explaining FIV and posts on how to care for my kittie...

I had been thinking of starting a club for those of us with FIV+ kitties but I can´t do it if I don´t know if there are any others who have FIV+ kitties...

As I said I honestly don´t want to be mean or sound like a witch because it truely isn´t what I want. But I don´t want the thread getting lost either....

angielyn, I understand your frustration because the same thing has happened in a couple of threads I´ve started - the original question was buried. Please remember, everyone is trying to help - so it´s usually with the best intentions.

I´ve just posted this in another thread. Be careful about putting club ideas in the forum. Anyone can use the idea and if the idea is acceptable, it will be the first application that is approved so someone else could end up having the club you wanted to start.

Sorry none of mine are FIV but I´m sure there would be quite a few with the disease.
Sorry if you feel the thread has gone of track but in regards to Lenna who asked what FIV was we were just trying to inform her and everyone else what the disease is and what it does.

My Bryan Barley had FIV. He got it from a fight he had with a gorgeous stray cat that I use to feed. Unfortunately he has passed away now.......from cancer though not FIV. The poor stray cat I had put to sleep as he also had FeLV (feline leukaemia). My friends cat was diagnosed with FIV and he lived happily with it for many, many years. He only died because he was run over the poor darling. Angielyn I´m sure your Booboo will have a healthy long, long life. If you ever want to talk about it you can cat mail me anytime

None of mine have it that i know of anyways and they are all vaccinated against it, even tho they dont go outside i stress lol.

2.July 2008 13:01

I can´t say i´ve had Topaz tested for it.
The first i even heard about this was on an animal show last week!! LOL

2.July 2008 13:34

Mollybellashakes, I think that your cats are vaccinated against Felv and not FIV because, unfortunately, it does not exist yet a virus against this disease.

2.July 2008 13:49

My cat (became my mom´s cat when I moved out) Tommy was diagnosed with Felv like five months back..he weighs the lowest he has in a long time...But I think if someone were to make a club about this, it should include Felv + cats too, because it would seem they are both very likely to contract secondary infections and it´s not unheard of for cancer to crop up.

Hi, Yes I have had several cats at different times that tested positive for FIV,some lived to be 7 to 10 yrs old, I would love them and when they would start showing signs of the illness I wouldn´t make them stay with me I would let them go to the rainbow. To bad we can´t do that with humans .

Micini I agree 100%, I don´t let my cats outside & when they did test positive I would make special care in keeping my home extra clean, litter box cleaned several times a day, I to have an imune diffiency disease(not Aids) they aren´t sure why I have it but my cats are kept happy & lots of things to stimulate them in the house. I also will not bring in other cats when I know they test neg, but will take in ones that test positive as they need special care and I am good for doing that just ask the 100s of cats & kittens I have taken care of.

Vlccta, I know that the subject is not about Felv but FIV.
However, a cat tested positig in Felv can cure himself with help.
See my thread, if you agree :
