So far in the last year I´ve had two cats that died mysteriously and quite quickly, both showing the exact same signs.
Both were fine just 2 or 3 hours before they became sick. Perfectly fine. Then all of a sudden they were both seen running around and twitching, falling to the ground in spasmodic twitches minutes later, and then dead. The first one that died was buried soon after (so any post-mordem signs were unable to be seen), the second one, she stood outside dead for at least five hours because I was coming back from vacation so her burial had to wait. But when I arrived there was foam around her mouth every where, and she seems to have lost control of her bowels during some time that she entered the garage before her death.
I really don´t know what it could have been but Im so determined to find out. My suspisions tell me poison because of the twitching and sudden death after being just perfectly fine. But also I suspect because there´s this very crazy pyscho man you lives across the street that likes to do weird rituals (not like Pagan or Wiccan rituals but like.. i.e. He sets up things infront of his house to keep the demons out. He beat his mail box down so the devil couldn´t come it... etc). He beats seearly on his animals, and it´s suspected that he killed one. I saw him sprinkling something suspicious on this law in certain places the other day when I drove by. He always put that weird stuff in the same place, never anywhere else. Could this be me being paraniod? Or do I really have a good reason for suspicion? Anyone know what else it could have been?

I am very sorry about your poor kitties. A very sad story. It does sound like poisoning, but I would not rush into blaming your neighbour without proof, even if he is an unsavoury character. There are many poisons around like rat poison or chemical spills in the road - antifreeze, motor oil, fertiliser etc. Should you ever get another cat, I would keep it safely indoors. |

Well I have four out door cats and one indoor cat. Im nto even supposed to have this kitten as an indoor cat because my mom´s VERY allergic. So keeping them inside will have to wait till I move to Boston. But I´ve already check our WHOLE area for ANYTHING that could have even POSSIBLY hurt my babbies, and nothing. We have no poisons that we´ve put out and all mechanic oils type stuff that could hurt animals is locked away in high places and doubly checked to be closed (we had a dog die from eatign anti-freeze). That´s why I´m so confused. We live in the country so we thought maybe snake? But no puncture holes could be found (then again they might not be visible). But what´s the chance of two cats gettign bit by the same type of snake? Especially when we don´t have very poisonous snakes at all. *sigh* Thank you thoug |

You say you saw your neighbor sprinkling something on his yard. It could have been pesticide or ant killer or something similar. Your cats could have gotten into that, but your neighbor didn´t necessarily do it on purpose. |

Well, there a poisonous plants and secondary poisoning by eating poisoned rodents or birds. The possibilities are endless really. |

Thanks both of you. I´m going to contact a vet through online, our vet care in Brunswick County is extremley poor. I never really thought of those things. I just kinda fixated on thinking maybe if it asn´t poison it was some random cat disease. But how coinincidental could it be that two cats some 8 odd months apart ate an animal that had the same type pf poison in it? And if it were a plant my other cats would have gotten into it by now? Im get a hold of a vet though |

Oldwoman is right - the possibilities are rather endless I´m afraid. The only way you might know is to have one of the unfortunate cats autopsied - a blood panel for toxins may be able to tell you what the cause was, if it was poison. Unfortunately it´s also expensive to do that. Your neighbour sounds like a wingnut, but be careful about jumping on the blame wagon - it could open you up to all sorts of unpleasant consequences. Can you construct a simple outdoor pen for your outdoor cats? It sounds like it might be best to keep them from wandering outside your yard. They might not be happy about being confined, but at least they´d be safe until your move. There are a couple of threads on here with advice about that. |

Oh no! I´m very sorry to hear this. I´m also sorry you´re not able to keep the kitties inside. It´s so easy for them to get into dangerous situations. Poor things |

If you know anyone handy with a hammer, you might be able to construct one yourself with some fence posts and chicken wire. You just have to make sure there are no sharp pokey bits anywhere and the posts are sunk well enough to anchor them firmly. Good luck! |
