Molly has horrid eyes during winter. There must be something outside that irritates him, if he´s inside for a day they tend to be ok.

The discharge is thick and reddy/brown. He also has tender skin around the corner of the eye. They do hurt a bit, coz he squints at me sometimes. I´ll take a pic later and post here.

I wash them daily with water. My question is do you think washing them with salt water or bettadine would help?

He is ok within himself, he´s perfectly happy and normal, and I don´t really want to head into the vet to start him on meds if I can avoid it. Of course if it ever got really bad, that will happen without question.

It sounds a bit like it might be an allergy. Seasonal, affected by exposure outdoors, no other symptoms and in health otherwise...I´m thinking allergic irritation? Andy had the same issue. Definitely don´t use Betadine. It´s a topical antiseptic for cleaning wounds that I think contains iodine - it would be extremely painful and dangerous to get it in Mol´s eye. Be careful with homemade saline solution - you want to make sure it´s sterile and the right saline percentage. In Andy´s case, two weeks with antibiotic drops made a huge difference (he had a mild infection irritating his inner eyelids as well). The vet told me to use regular buffered saline eye drops (for human eyes) after the antibiotics were done, to help relieve the dryness and irritation. I was using Natural Tears, but I think there are a number of varieties and they´re not all pricey. Maybe try a drop or two of saline eyedrops from a drug store twice a day, and wipe gently with a damp cloth. If that doesn´t help (or it gets worse) then definitely see your vet.

Are you sure it is not cat flu? My adult cats used to get it every winter before I started inoculating them. It may be flu, even if he is inoculated. Admittedly, it does not sound like full scale cat flu, but adult cat can have just reduced symptoms, especially if they have been inoculated.

I knew I wouldn´t regret asking. I know Bettadine is ok for wounds, but wasn´t sure about the eyes. And yeah it does have iodine in it.

I will try the saline eye drops. Mol is inoculated. It could well be, he gets mucky eyes every winter. Seems to be ok in the spring. Funny, I´d expect allergies to crop up then. Normally I don´t stress about the muck, but because he does get sore It concerns me. He´s not stressed at all. His nose & mouth are clear, and has no coughing or sneezing. Just the irritated eyes.

Thank You guys. Pretty much confirmed what I thought too.
