My cat has diarrhea and I´m not sure why...

A few weeks ago my cat had diarrhea for a day, it went away for a day and came back. She was fine until today and she got it again. She has not gotten into anything that I am aware of, she only has 1/2 a small tin of wet food a day, she was outside yesterday for about 30 mins but she has been out most days and been fine.

I have not taken her to the vet at this point as she is fine the day after she is not feeling well and it does not last all day. Could this be a symptom of a bigger health issue?

My cat Molly gets dioreah whenever he gets stressed. Plus it could be that she is a touch sensitive to something in the food she is eating. First thing is to feed her a very bland diet. Boiled chicken is best. Feed her that for about 3 days, until she is pooping normally again.

If after three days she isn´t pooping properly on the chicken diet, take her to the vet.

After the three days, reintroduce one of her foods to her. just that and the chicken for 2 days, if no dioreahh, then move onto the wet food.

Sometimes they get tummy bugs and it can take a bland diet to bind them back up.

Of course if at anytime she gets really sick, see your vet.

Sometimes, cats with diarrhea need worming. Worm her and keep her on the bland diet for a few days and then see what happens. If she is still having diarrhea, then definetly take her to the vet.
There are tablets you can give to stop diarrhea but see if it is worms first.

Hope she is better soon.

Repeated bouts of diarrhea could be a sign of a greater issue, so you might want to start keeping a diary - make some notes in your calender about when it occurs and how long it lasts. If it´s only diarrhea she may just need worming or change of diet. Worms/parasites go through stages of egg laying and hatching that could cause periodic diarrhea - ask your vet about worming pills. If it´s a food intolerance, you could try switching her to a hypo-allergenic food. There are many out there to choose from. Try what furrypaws suggests and feed her a bland diet for a day or two, then switch (gradually so as not to shock her system) to the hypo-allergenic food and see if that helps. Meanwhile have a good look round your garden to see if there´s anything she might be getting into. If she shows any other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, blood or parasites in her stool) definitely get her into the vet asap.

BTW, If it turns out to be a parasite, you probably want to have both Kali and Loki wormed at the same time - if they´re littermates you might even want to switch both to the hypo-allergenic food.

Is your cat drinking milk? Once a kitten gets to be about a year old, some of them have problems drinking milk or cream - it can definitely give them diarrhea. (I think that´s the hardest word in the dictionary to spell - took me three tries to get it right!)

I don´t mean Mom cat´s milk, of course, that wouldn´t upset their stomachs. But cow milk, like we humans drink.

I didn´t even think to ask the same question about milk that Wolfie just asked - she´s perfectly right. Any dairy product at all (milk, cream, cheese...) can cause diarrhea so it´s usually not a good treat - even occasionally. As cats (like humans) get older they usually become lactose intolerant. If you like to give dairy as treats there are cat milk formulas on the market, and you could ask your vet about whether lactose-free cow milk is acceptable.

I know this has been said already but it is worth stressing. Little kittens - or cats - don´t like cow´s milk very much. I think it is too rich for them as as Michy D says, they become lactose intolerant. You can get catmilk or if you want to give cow´s milk try giving just a little bit ... I do this with Kimmy, like a treat. Or try watering it down, this seems to work. But usually I give Kimmy Whiskas milk. I don´t know if other types of milk are better (Soya?) but I would even say why give milk at all? Water is better. I would say that they are like us and just have off days from time to time. Is she OK now? Someone I know has this rtrouble a lot as her cat has a delicate stomach and she gives him/her Science Diet I/D. I gather it is good.

Thanks for all the information. We have kept her inside for the last week and she is doing fine. We think that she was eating to much grass when she would get ouside, and she could not handle it. We are keeping an eye out, and if it comes back we will take her to the vet.

sugar water can help with dehydration if she starts acting sluggish
