Calling a cat.....

Hi.....In America, I call my cat by saying a rolling tongue idea......"Kitty, Kitty, Kitty".....over and over again in a high pitched lilting tone, usually putting in the cat´s name at the beginning or end of my trilling the word, ´Kitty."

When I was in Germay, I realized my way is not universal.....duh!!!.....ha! ha!!!!!.....as not one cat paid any attention to my sounds...

...........so, was wondering if you can write, here, how, in your country, you would call yours or any other cat if you did not use its name?

Another popular way of cat calling by English speaking folks "psss psss psss" is also used widely in Italy!!

Or we also say "micio micio micio.." too, which is precisely the equivalent of "kitty kitty kitty" in English!

Hmmmm, LianOllie.......wonder if that is a British way of calling a cat.....I have never heard an American use those sounds.......

I am half Italian, so I need to remember that Italian way........of course, would help to have an Italian cat around.....ha!

Maybe a Brit will expound on the way Brits call cats........

I like that thread In Bulgarian we have several options when calling a cat. For example, we may use: "mazzi pissi pissi"r just "mazz piss piss". It appears that we also have the American option, Songbird...and the Italian one, LianOllie. However, we replace the English kitty (or the Italian micio) with its Bulgarian translation, and the result is: "kote kote kote"

In Lithuania we mostly call cats by saying "ks ks ks". Sometimes we use "kisa kisa kisa", "kisia kisia kisia" (both of them are equal to "kitty kitty kitty") and sounds/words similar to these.

Wow.....how fun to read....thanks so much....would have never guessed.......I also notice that in America, in calling ´Kitty, Kitty´ over and over again as fast as one wishes....that we Americans seem to like to use sounds ending in ´eeeee´ in words and names in regards to being able to call a cat......obviously, other names are chosen for cats but for many of us, in our language the ´eeeee´ sound rolls off the tongue so easily or so we are conditioned to think so.....´Kitteeeeee,´ for example.......

..........and it appears that the ´eeee´ sound on an ending of a word makes it more of an endearing way to refer to someone or an animal that we love or feel good about........so, we will add the ´eee´ sound to a name that doesn´t use an ´eeee´ ending, to make the reference seem more loving.....like my daughter, Anne. We, often call her Annie....she isn´t amused as she wants to be a ´serious´ Anne, not an Annie (pronounce: Anneeeee) that sounds young she says......ha!....she lets me call her that but in the business world, she is ´Anne´

Is it the same in anyone else´s language?

In Greece we just say "pss pss pss"-Lia, I´ve never heard this in Italy, at least here where I live, they use the "mic´ mic´" way!

23.July 2008 18:54

Scusa, Licia, sei diventata "Lia" per forza di scrivere in fretta!

I used to say "kitty kitty kitty" but for some reason as I aged my tongue got thick, so I now say, "kee! kee! kee!" There´s that "eeeee" sound, Songbird!

I cannot use the Greek on, "pss pss pss" (which sounds like "puss puss puss" to me) because my "no" word is always "Tssssssst!" so I cannot use a word which sounds like punishment to the cat. I figured using a hiss like a mama cat would, I don´t even need to teach words to my kitta.

Indeed many Americans do that psss psss psss thing too, I heard that said many times while I was there or perhaps it´s a Texas thing...

In Chile we say cushito cushito to call cats.
Once a belgan guy came to chile and he used the kitty kitty, but the cat didnt came, we teach him the cushito thing and voila, then he came (the cat).

In Dutch it is usually ppsss ppsssss pppssssss or poes poes poes (pronounced as ´puss´ in English) - poes being the equivalent of kitty

hi people, in Portuguese we say "psss psss psss", and "mimi... miminho..."

when they are in the good mood they come to us... =))))

but the best technique is the smell of a tasty snack!

5.August 2008 22:39

In Serbia, we say "Mac, mac, mac" ("c" we say as "ts")
)))

Or the sound... shaking of a cannister of Whiskas temptations always works for Oliver

In Abruzzo (Italy) my friends say "Mish, mish, mish" and it works!. In Lombardia, we use a sound like a kiss.

8.August 2008 02:23

In Latvia we say "ks, ks, ks, ks" or "kis, kis, kis, kis" or "min, min, min, min". All variant works good, but not at all cats. One came on ks, ks, ks, one came on min, min, min.

In Lithuania we mostly call cats by saying "ks ks ks". Sometimes we use "kisa kisa kisa", "kisia kisia kisia" (both of them are equal to "kitty kitty kitty") and sounds/words similar to these.
...and sometimes we call cats by saying ´kis kis kis´

Here in Colombia we say ´michi michi michi´ a little alike the Italian way... and a lot of people put that name on their cats as well. A time ago when I saw cats on the street I tried to call them by doin´ a kinda ´micy´ sound, like a squeak sound, and they always turned to see me but never got too close, so better don´t try that.

16.August 2008 13:30

Here in Finland we usually say "kis kis kis" or " ks ks ks" like in Latvia and Lithuania or "kisu kisu kisu" (means "kitty kitty kitty"). And sometimes that works, sometimes doesn´t, depending on what mood your cat is in

29.August 2008 15:37

Like Lithuania & Latvia we sounds too: "ks-ks-kss" (if we see cat); and calling them: "ki-iss, ki-isss, kiss!" (if we don`t see them at moment) - sounds like english KISS, but "i" is longer and "sss" is softer - because we puttin`oure love in this word...
"Kitu - kitu" we call too (sounds "khee-too, khee-too")...
For punishment we use balled-up newspaper or hand-sprinkler, i just say wery clear and loud name of my cat - thats enough for her...
NOW I REALLY WISH TO THIS SITE: TO PUT IN OPTION - "SOUND RECORDER" IN A FORUM.
Thats may help us with language & cat-voices... Might be funny.......
abaut my english - sorry again...
