Some books and stories and poems are supposedly about other people or creatures, but there is a memorable cat in them.

Alice in Wonderland´s Cheshire Cat springs to mind
I have more but someone else go next, okay?

MY MY MY! I cannot believe this slipped my mind! I have forgotten the most beloved set of kitty cat characters ever! Simba, Nala, Sarabi, Mufasa, Kovu, Chiara, Scar and Zeera! Aha! And all their lion and lioness friends!

12.July 2008 13:02

You like Disney cats! The Lion King cats are great! While we´re on lions, let´s not forget Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia.

ALL of the suspense in the first Alien movie came for me from worrying that Jonesy the ship´s cat was going to get alien-ated.

T.S. Elliott loved cats and his poems about cats are so delightful to me

Mr Mistoffelees

OH!
Well I never!
Was there ever
A cat so clever
As Magical Mr Mistoffelees!

T.S. Eliot

The Rum Tum Tugger

The Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat:
If you offer him pheasant he would rather have grouse.
If you put him in a house he would much prefer a flat,
If you put him in a flat then he´d rather have a house.
If you set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat,
If you set him on a rat then he´d rather chase a mouse.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And there isn´t any call for me to shout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there´s no doing anything about it!

The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore:
When you let him in, then he wants to be out;
He´s always on the wrong side of every door,
And as soon as he´s at home, then he´d like to get about.
He likes to lie in the bureau drawer,
But he makes such a fuss if he can´t get out.

Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And there isn´t any use for you to doubt it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there´s no doing anything about it!

The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious beast:
His disobliging ways are a matter of habit.
If you offer him fish then he always wants a feast;
When there isn´t any fish then he won´t eat rabbit.
If you offer him cream then he sniffs and sneers,
For he only likes what he finds for himself;

So you´ll catch him in it right up to the ears,
If you put it away on the larder shelf.
The Rum Tum Tugger is artful and knowing,
The Rum Tum Tugger doesn´t care for a cuddle;
But he´ll leap on your lap in the middle of your sewing,
For there´s nothing he enjoys like a horrible muddle.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And there isn´t any need for me to spout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there´s no doing anything about it!

T. S. Elliot

when we talk of Disney cats, one shouldn´t forget the great D.C. and the cat who came from outer space - particularly the lat scene, when the cat becomes the citizen of the US.

23.July 2008 04:26

Among the literary cats I´ve got so many friends, it would be difficult to name all of them. To mention a few: Koko and Yum Yum, Pelle Svanslos, Mrs Murphy, Miss Lucie, Cleo de Merode...

25.July 2008 16:10

Among the mystery cats, we like Midnight Louie best.
He´s black, you know. He was the late great Treat´s favorite too. Cisco and Pancho

25.July 2008 20:18

One of my favorite characters is Bulghakov´s black Cat Behemot: the scenes, when he tried to take a tram in Moskow, when he played chess.
Absolute favorite scene is from Mrs Murphy mystery, when Mrs Murphy, Pewter and Tucker were driving a Porshe!!!

26.July 2008 15:39

Yes, that was a great scene! One in Midnight Louie that was really good was when Louie enlisted his mother (Ma)´s clowder-gang to ambush a bunch of motorcycle riding drug dealers, shredding the saddle bags with the drugs and taking off with the bikes.
There was a great cat character in THE MASTER AND MARGARITA too, another Russian novel I enjoyed several times. Trying to remember the cat´s name now.

There was an Elfin cat in the Kate Forsyth series, "The Witches of Eileannan" but I forgot it´s name. It was ferocious, but took to one of the orphan waifs, and they became a formidable team. Kate Forsyth is an Aussie writer.
