(British) Magpie

The Magpie with its immaculate black and white plumage and green and blue gloss, is an unmistakable bird. In flight it can be easily distinguished by its long-tailed profile.

Magpie Magpie Magpie!
I wish you weren´t so giant
And that you were more compliant
So I could bake you in a pie!

I saw magpies JUST today!!! But they were Australian ones, which are black with the white on the wings and a white "hood" on the back of their neck. You can see pictures of them - adults and juvies - in my blog!

I love magpies, they are fascinating, but I´m a little afraid of them. Piper

Thats them! The birds that mock me every day of the week! I will gets them I will >

House Sparrow

Very small birds about 5.75 inches (14.5 cm) total length. Males have a striped back, the crown of the head is gray while the back of the neck is brown. Mature males are also characterized by their black bib. Females and juveniles are brown with striped backs, unspotted buff bellies and a buff eye stripe

9.June 2008 23:27

OMG!!! SMALL birds????? I´ve never SEEN one that small!!!!! Bet it´s tasty! Bet it´s FAST and fluttery!!! Bet it´s hard hard hard to catch! Piper

12.June 2008 20:47

We don´t get magpies where I live, but I love to catch sparrows!

16.June 2008 03:33

House Sparrow. The perfect snack-sized bird. Serving suggestion: Tenderize well by batting round the garden for an hour or so before eating. Thandi and Shibula.
P.S. In South Africa, we have the Cape Sparrow, which comes in the same lovely snack size as the house sparrow, but is a very handsome bird with very well defined chocolaty brown barring on the back. The male has a really lovely big, black bib on his chest. I think the human would be really miffed with us if we managed to grab one of those, but so far we´ve had no success!!

Wood Pigeon

The wood pigeon is the UK´s largest and commonest pigeon. Weighing on average 450g. They make a very loud clatter of their wings when they fly away.

17.June 2008 03:13

I hate the wood pigeons - they´re always teasing me - they waddle about the back garden and because I´m a house cat I can´t even get at them. They always look so fat and tasty!

17.June 2008 10:18

Are those wood pigeons that you´re watching through the window in the photo on the Birdwatchers Club logo? If only you could get to them, I´m sure you´d score yourself a great meal. They don´t look like they´d be too hard to catch!! Thandi,Shibula and Baileys

17.June 2008 17:45

Ooh Oooh! OOHH!!! Pigeons! That´s a handsome pigeon you´ve got there. I was just telling (under "tales") about how I almost got my paws on a pigeon today! But our pigeon is different from your pigeon - but not much! It´s wild, and gray, and fat and tasty - but not quite as fat as your wood pigeon!
Here´s a crested pigeon, and I´d love to get my paws on one of them! Your pigeon looks like our dove!

Crested pigeon

Spotted dove
and the ´puter just told me that this dove is from India and Asia, and is not native to Australia - it came here in the 1860´s, and it´s really . . . a pigeon!!!

I once caught a bird that looked like a pidgeon. I left it on the driveway near the walkway for my mommy to find it. My grandma found it instead and showed my mommy. Then she took it away somewhere. I think they eated it! - Suki

I think it was actually a Morning Dove. (It was so sad seeing it all dead and laying there. We moved it into the woods.) - Brenna

ooooooo pigeons! nasty little buggers! Somewhere in my neighborhood someone owns pigeons. they sit on the back fence and tease me with their "coo coo coo", it drives me batty!!! I just want to go out there and stop their teasing!! hiss!! Mom hates them too, they poo all over the fence and she has to clean the fence off to ward off the flies. eeewwyy!!! One day I´m gonna get them and show them a few of my cat-fu moves! hiiiyyaaahh!
