My first earthquake

My dear buddies....

Aaaaarrghhh! I´ve just felt my very first earthquake just now! It happened about an hour ago...mummy was watching TV, daddy was fiddling around with his PC, while Mimi and me were sleeping out in the living room of our 8th floor condo.

All of a sudden, we felt the whole world started shaking...things started moving to the left and right. Mimi and me quickly got up from our beds and looked at mummy (while nervously flicking our ears)...mummy looked confused, as if she was having a major headache. Since she didn´t jump up and run around the house madly, we calmed down and started to lie down again. By this time the tremors have stopped...for a while.

About 3 seconds after that, we felt the tremors again. I said to Mimi, "Mimi get up, get up girl! This is driving me nuts!". So we both jumped up and started flicking our ears nervously again. It frightened us real badly, as we have never felt anything like it before.

Mummy, upon seeing us standing up nervously and seeing objects starting to shift, then proceeded to stand up and went crazy! She called Daddy and Daddy called her, but nobody called us! I guess they need each other very much, huh? Lol..

Anyway, the second tremors didn´t last long. Things went back to normal after that, but Mummy and Daddy looked very nervous...because this is the 1st earthquake for them too, since Malaysia is not affected by earthquakes, generally. Mummy started packing stuff into a bag and she even got out our pet carrier...just in case, she said. Even Mimi and me started packing up our kitbag with our toothbrush, hehe.

Well, Daddy checked the USGS website, and it turns out the tremors we felt were caused by a 5.9 magnitude quake located in Indonesia, about 300+ km away from us. Here´s more info on the quake http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008sfa9.php

I wonder how the cats over there are doing... I hope they´re alright. Mummy and Daddy have both settled down now, and Mimi and me have put away our toothbrushes. Don´t worry friends, we are alright!

Peace and
Snow

P.S: The photo shows me cowering under the crumpled ´doorway´ of our mousie tent

Thank you all for the lovely and heartwarming comments. Michael, it´s good to hear that you and your Mummy have left China...and hence safe from the bad earthquake there about a week ago. Up till now, my Mummy and Daddy can only watch TV when there´s news regarding earthquakes, but now that they´ve had a first hand experience, I think they will appreciate it a bit more. Both mine and Mimi´s thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and cats of the China quake.

Oh my goodness that must have been terrifying!! Mummy experienced some of them growing up, and tells me she always panicked at even a tiny one... I never have felt one before but Italy is no stranger to earthquakes either, I am getting worried!! I think your mum did well to keep you guys from becoming too frightened... she must have known the terrible disaster happened a little north of the part of your world last week, and must have been really worried.
I am glad you guys are safe!! xxx Oliver & mum Licia

Thank you Oliver and Licia! Yes, it was terrifying, to say the least. I know about the fact that cats have a sort of advance warning system when it comes to natural disasters, but in this case we simply had no clue, cuz it was our first! Oh well, I hope Mummy and Daddy won´t think any less of us simply cuz we can´t predict earthquakes for them!

Don´t worry Ollie, I´m sure your wonderful Mummy will keep you safe!

In South Africa we NEVER get earthquakes. It´s just impossible. We´re nowhere near any faults, or the edge of any tectonic plates. We don´t have the right geography for earthquakes. I´ve never felt one in my LIFE! Maybe you should persuade your mum and dad to move here, Snow!

Defiansky, no...the mousie tent didn´t actually collapsed during the earthquake...me and Mimi already collapsed it earlier! Heheh. Anyway, I looked so scared while I was lying there that Mummy snapped the pic, it was about 5 mins after we felt the tremors.

darcyd, did Super Cisco find out anything about the cats´ condition in Indonesia? I hope they will able to help out all the kitties there...and who knows, maybe they can get new recruits for the Superhero Cat League eh? Imagine that, Super Cisco in Indonesia handing out capes!

darcyd, both Mimi and me would like to give you our condolences on your loss of Treat. You must be a very strong cat Mummy to go through all that.

That´s right Muddy, my mummy and daddy have both never felt earthquakes before this...because Malaysia is not an earthquake-prone zone either! Our country doesn´t lie on any fault lines too...but sometimes I think the tremors are able to reach us. Hope it doesn´t happen again Oh yeah, I´ll have to think about moving to S.Africa Muddy...is there a lot of cute female kitties there? That might be a deciding factor, hehe

to you all,
Snow
